I have been an avid reader all my life . I read a new book every month or so, which adds up to about 12 books per year. As a rule, I always read at least few pages every day. Often it is a lot more than that. I squeeze reading in whenever I can — primarily weeknights before bed and then throughout the weekend. My friends and I were having a discussion about reading and it made me think about why I started reading books. “To think about things I normally wouldn’t” was the phrase that came to mind.
I always read real, physical books — I don’t own a Kindle, or any other type of e-reader. I spend most of my work day in front of a computer screen, so I choose to be digital-free during my reading time. Holding and reading a book relaxes and invigorates me — and it is one of the few activities that can cause me to totally lose track of time.
We all need times of escaping from our daily life, our reality . Books provide exactly this. A portal to temporary freedom from real life. I like fiction because it helps me escape from my real life temporarily. Reading a good book changes me as a person. Certain beliefs I had about the world have changed. Certain emotional truths have been revealed to me. My image of myself has changed. My understanding of the world, people, and most importantly, myself, has changed, always for the better. Reading is a tremendous way to grow as a person, because these new ideas, new ways of thinking, new conceptions of reality, all seem like they’re originating from inside my own head, and reading gives me the time to process them over the course of the book. So next time you pass by a bookstore, grab a book and read!
