I’ve told myself I’ll move every year but never do. This past June, I finally made the big jump and got my own place. It’s a pretty spacious one bedroom with a good closet and a nice balcony. It was quite the journey and there were lots of steps involved but I made it! Moving into my first apartment was quite daunting, the first night was almost frightening, because I was used to being in a house w/ people. But I got used to living on my own pretty quickly. I had lived in dorms while in high-school so the apartment noises were pretty similar. But for the most part it’s been a positive experience, the maintenance staff is on top of things, and I’m only 45 minutes away from the office.
Before moving, it was essential for me to use my parents as a resource. For example, they accompanied me to my first apartment viewing. They can see things that I couldn’t. They have gone through this before and their past experiences can help prevent mistakes of your own. Life in an apartment did take getting used to, it was also the first time in years I had lived alone with no one except my family living with me.
Once I got the unpacking done and was settled in I was thankful to have the peace and quiet. Now I have adjusted fairly well, the light random noises from neighbors I hardly notice, I go out and visit with friends a few times a week to keep from feeling lonely and when I get bored at home I work on cleaning, cooking, baking and other tasks. I now like being in my apartment and I am fine with being alone, in fact I prefer it over how I used to live. One hard fact of moving is I’ll hardly have any money for myself. Besides the rent, there’s the food, electricity and toiletries. After a month of coming into the regular billing cycle, all seems well. As much as I love my apartment as is, I’d still like to spruce it up a bit, maybe add some wall paintings, plants. I’m also yet to host a big group of people, hoping to do that soon as well. I love coming home, getting into my bed, pulling my comforter up under my chin, looking around and smiling because the apartment I’m in? It’s mine.
