How My Love for Storytelling Impacted My Career

I’ve always believed in the importance of loving what you do. For as long as I can remember, reading books has been a source of joy for me, starting when I was around eight years old. Fiction, in particular, captivated me—transporting me to exciting new worlds full of adventure. I devoured everything from the Sweet Valley series to Animorphs, Nancy Drew, Harry Potter, and Famous Five. Naturally, English was my favorite subject in school. My love for reading eventually evolved into a desire to create my own worlds, which sparked my passion for storytelling and writing. Writing fiction allowed me to craft stories that whisked me away to places beyond reality.

It was clear to me early on that storytelling would play a significant role in my life. My career path felt like a natural progression—I either wanted to work in publishing, journalism, or as an English teacher. After studying for a Diploma in Journalism and Media Studies, I started my career in print media, interning at a local newspaper in Nairobi. Initially, I was assigned to the news desk, but it didn’t take long for the editor to notice that my writing was better suited to feature stories. I later pursued a degree in Public Relations, where I discovered the vast world of communications beyond just media or publishing.

I officially began my professional journey in corporate communications, focusing on content creation for a company’s website, quarterly newsletter, and social media pages. The blend of visual and written communication, through photography and graphic design, was an exciting and fulfilling part of the job. However, I soon realized that the corporate world wasn’t enough to sustain my long-term interest. Seeking new challenges, I expanded my job search to the non-profit sector while honing my skills in photography and graphic design through online tutorials. I also discovered my talent for telling human interest stories.

Today, I do work that allows me to blend creativity with purpose. Whether I’m writing an article, creating content, or telling human-interest stories, I’m reminded that this all began with a simple love for reading and the worlds it opened up for me.

Storytelling has given me more than just a career—it’s given me a way to make an impact, one word at a time.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have found a career that allows me to nurture my passions and make an impact. Every day, I’m reminded of how much I love what I do.
